This Saturday a talent rich middleweight division will face off to decide the combatants that will face one another in the finals of the M-1 Selection: Americas tournament. The event takes place at Bally’s hotel and casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey with the opening bell ringing at 7:30 p. m..
Middleweight Division
Shane Primm vs. Mike Geurin
At 6-3 Shane Primm brings a solid record against quality opponents into the semi-finals. Fighting out of Gracie Tampa, it almost goes without saying that Primm’s ground game is top notch.
Primm enters the semi-finals off a strong performance in his opening round fight with Wesley Welch. Primm was able to work his game and end the fight :39 seconds into the second round by guillotine choke.
Always working to improve, Primm has worked to round out his game and now has his sights set on the finals.
Mike Geurin is not your average wrestler. At 7-1 Geurin has a very lethal striking game, that has been responsible for 5 of his wins being stopped by TKO.
Fighting out of team Bombsquad, Geurin is excited for the chance to compete and advance.
Geurin had an impressive quarterfinal fight, he and opponent Todd Chattelle battled until :32 seconds of the third round, when Geurin turned on the power , forcing the referee to step in and stop the contest.
This match up has potential to be the fight of the night, as these two top prospects go to battle for one spot in the finals.
Tyson Jeffries vs. Plinio Cruz
As a Sport Fight veteran, Tyson Jeffries has the qualities and skills it takes to be successful as a mixed martial arts fighter and being exposed to the Team Quest mentality and professionalism of notable teammate and UFC Middleweight contender, Chael Sonnen, is certainly aiding his development. ” I train with the some of the best fighters in the world … I owe lots of appreciation to my coaches and friends,” says Jeffries.
Jeffries enters the semi-final round of the tournament coming of a submission win over Mike Johnson. Submission wins are familiar territory for the fighter as all 5 of his career wins have come by submission stoppage.
Plinio Cruz is a hard hitting fighter out of the Macaco Gold Team. The least experienced of our semi finalists at 3-2, Cruz showed the heart of a champion in a grueling first round fight with M-1 Challenge veteran John “Iron Bull” Doyle. Cruz looked good early and often against the durable Doyle, and he pounded his way to a 15 minute unanimous decision victory.
A trip to the M-1 Selection: Americas finals has the potential for redemption for Cruz. Should both he and Mike Geurin advance, it will set up a rematch between the two fighters, and give Cruz a chance to settle the score for his only stoppage loss.
