M-1 Selection Eastern Europe preview

rashid-magomedov-def-alexey-nazarov03On April 10 -1 Global will visit Moscow to hold Russia’s biggest MMA show of 2010. Take a look at the impressive list of participants. There will be several fights fought in the -1 tournament and some reserve matches.

Welterweight Grand Prix reserve fight

Anzor Kardanov (Anapa) 4-1 – Bislan Etleshev (Sochi) 2-2

This will be a rematch for the fighters as they have already fought each other at M-1 Selection 4 back in 2009. Kardanov was stronger that night and won by a choke. Bislan said he was not in the best shape and was eager to prove it.

Welterweight Grand Prix

Said Khalilov (Action Force) 16-6 – Ramazan Abdulzhalilov (Legion) 4-1

People may not be familiar with Khalilov as he replaces the injured Alexander Butenko in the upcoming GP quarterfinals. Now he’s set to meet this Grand Prix’ dark horse. Abdulzhalilov is the UFO combat sambo champion and hailing from famed Legion where he trains alongside his well-known cousin Magomed Shikhshabekov. Khalilov has fought at M-1 Selection 8 last year when he lost to Rustam Khabilov by decision. This time he’s meeting another Legionary and it’s safe to say he’ll try to even the score.


Shamil Zavurov (Rusfighters) 12-1 – Radik Iboyan (Red Devil) 5-0

Being just 25 Zavurov already boasts an incredible collection of various awards and titles. He’s 3-time world combat sambo champion, 2-time CIS hand-to-hand combat champion and Dagestan sanshou champion, just to name a few. Add to this impressive list more than 50 amateur MMA fights and a professional record of 12 wins against just 1 defeat and you’ll get a glimpse of what Zavurov is. It remains to be seen what combat sambo specialist and undefeated MMA fighter Iboyan can bring to the table against Zavurov.

Arsen Tamirkhanov 16-1 – Vladimir Opanasenko (Ukraine) 3-0

Fighting out of the city of Ekaterinburg, multiple combat sambo, jiu jitsu and pancration tournaments’ winner with 17 professional MMA fights under his belt with 16 wins to his credit, Temirkhanov is set to battle one of the best Ukrainian athletes in Opanasenko who’s, above all, world karate champion. In what he called a warm-up before the storm, Temirkhanov destroyed all his opponents at recent Moscow World combat opanasenko-smallsambo and showed he’s in great shape and ready to bang. Expect fireworks in this one!

Rashid Magomedov (Gorets) 14-0 – Magomedrasul Khasbulaev (Rusfighters) 12-2

Fans are going to be treated another uncompromising rematch and Magomedov will try to prevent the future rubber match and get his hand raised again. The only difference, according to Magomedov, is that this time around he’s gunning for an early stoppage. As of now, the Gorets athlete has yet to taste defeat. Moreover, he’s the M-1 Selection Russia 2009 proud of championship seal ring and enters this year’s welterweight Gran Prix as arguably the biggest favorite. However, his opponent has different plan for the rematch which he’s going to implement on April, 10.

Middleweight Grand Prix reserve fight

Shakhriyar Abassov (Azerbaijan) 21-1 – Ishkhan Zakaryan (Anapa) 11-8

A stocky and powerful Azerbaijanian with an impressive record and attacking style of fighting will battle it out with an experienced seasoned striker. No wonder, this bout will quite possibly be finished by way of knockout.

Light heavyweight Grand Prix reserve fight

Ali Omarov (Taganrog) 1-1 – Murad Magomedov (Legion) 0-0

Omarov’s first M-1 experience was a successful one as he choked his opponent out in the first round at M-1 Selection Russia 9. Worth being mentioned, Murad is the late replacement for his own brother Rasul who got injured 3 weeks ago.

Light heavyweight Grand Prix fight

Vyacheslav Vasilevsky (Combat Bears) 9-1 – (Ukraine) 3-0

It’s impossible to predict the outcome of this highly anticipated bout but the fans in attendance will undoubtedly get what they will have paid for. World combat sambo champion and MMA crushing machine Vasilevsky will face off against an undefeated prospect from the Ukraine whose fighting spirit and skills are respected in MMA community since his memorable fight against Davit Tkeshelashvili at M-1 Selection Ukraine 2009.

Ibragim Ibragimov (Sochi) 1-0 vs. TBA

Heavyweight Grand Prix

Denis Komkin (Action Force) 14-4 – Arsen Abdulkerimov (Gorets) 5-0

Abdulkerimov is set to return to the  M-1 stage to meet another Action Force athlete after defeating Abilov. This time he will meet the more experienced Komkin who’ll look not only to avenge his teammate’s loss but to win the whole HW Grand Prix. Komkin is the most experienced fighter among the heavyweights and is considered to be the favorite.

Maxim Grishin (Red Devil) 5-4 -  Gadzhimurad Nurmagomedov (Legion) 5-1

The bout between two young up-and-comers will clear the path to the top for one of them whereas the loser will go packing home. Grishin is Russian hand-to-hand combat champion who won all his Selection bouts in 2009 by knockouts. Nurmagomedov’s background is wrestling and combat sambo in which he reached the absolute top at World Championship. A classic match-up of striker versus grappler.

Alexander Volkov (Red Devil) 5-1 – Vitaly Yalovenko (Stary Oskol) 3-1-1

One of the most promising Russian fighters was in the spotlight last winter when he showcased his determination in an absolutely stunning victory against PRIDE veteran Ibragim Magomedov. Volkov’s next challenge is another seasoned veteran who’s got great judo and sambo skills to implement in an MMA bout. Volkov is not the one to shy away from taking any challenge while Yalovenko is trying to further develop his success in MMA.

Ruslan Stepanyan (Anapa) 1-0 – Alexander Romaschenko (Ukraine) 1-0

Two big heavyweights are fighting in the last Grand Prix brackets. Stepanyan is a experienced karate fighter and will take on world pancration champion Romaschenko. Both have won one MMA bout so far and will do their best to keep that zero intact.
