In a continuation of our statistical look at the top fighters in the M-1 Challenge, www.M-1Global.com presents its overview of the top knockout artists in the M-1 Challenge.
Instead of creating a subjective list, M-1Global.com contributing writer Fabrice Deters has created a statistical rankings system to determine the best of the best in various categories.
In the (T)KO category, a fighter receives three points per victory won via TKO or KO. In the event of a tie, the shortest amount of time in the ring will be used to separate fighters.
The current leader in the (T)KO standings is World Team heavyweight Michael Kitta, with a total of two TKOs in the 2009 “M-1 Challenge Presented by Affliction.”
Kitta TKO’d Akhmed Sultanov at 2:30 of round 2 on March 28 in Bulgaria and also TKO’d King of the Cage heavyweight prospect Liron Wilson earlier this month at 3:55 of round 1 in Kansas City.
Kitta’s total match time of 5:57 has created a large margin between he and USA West’s Raphael Davis, who TKO’d Brazil’s Jair Goncalves at 4:05 of round 1 during the ’09 season opener this past February in Tacoma, as well as South Korea’s Jae Young Kim this past April in Japan at 3:45 of round 2.
Davis’ win over Kim is listed as a submission, according to many fight finders, however, it is being considered as a TKO in our standings due to the fact that Kim tapped as a result to punches.
A huge pack of fighters with one TKO or KO to their credit this season then proceeds Kitta and Davis, with notable names such as Toni Valtonen of Finland, Shane Del Roasio of USA West, and rising prospect Gadzimyrat Omarov of Russia Legion.
However, it is (T)KOs recorded this year by Makhtar Gueye, Herbert Goodman, and Raymond Jarman that stand out the most. If the award for “Knockout of the Year” in the M-1 Challenge was decided today, all three would be in top contention.
Gueye, a lightweight for Team France, greeted a charging Ian Butlin of Team England at the start of their bout earlier this month with a rapid fire-like string of chain combination punches that resulted in Butlin being TKO’d just nine seconds into round 1.
During Jarman’s bout with Bulgaria’s Ivan Ivanov in Brazil, the Team Benelux welterweight scored a highlight reel knockout victory following a flying knee at 0:35 of round 1.
Goodman will also receive consideration at the end of the year for the award thanks to his dramatic second round knockout against former UFC middleweight Jordan Radev. Radev dominated the vast majority of the fight until Goodman rallied with a huge right cross that left Radev motionless as time expired.
But Goodman did not get immediate credit for the KO, as the referee did not step in to rule the fight as having been over by knockout prior to the sounding of the bell. As such, Radev was initially awarded the win via unanimous decision. However, replays clearly showed that Goodman landed the buzzer beater prior to the bell and M-1 officials reversed the decision later that night.
