Another surgery has cost Team USA East one of its best fighters, as M-1Global.com has confirmed with multiple sources that lightweight sensation Renato Migliaccio will be sidelined for the next three months with shoulder surgery having recently been scheduled.
The Ryan Gracie black belt has made a name for himself with two impressive wins in the M-1 Challenge this season but will miss a chance to go 3-0 as he will be unable to represent his team when it returns to action on Aug. 15 vs. Team Benelux.
Migliaccio joins welterweight prospect Steve Carl as the other USA East fighter to be sidelined. Carl recently underwent surgery to have a steel rod from his leg removed. The rod had been inserted several years ago after Carl was critically injured in an automobile accident. At the time of the injury, Carl had been told he would never fight again. His future career plans in MMA are currently uncertain at this time.
Described as “fighter shoulder,” Migliaccio’s lingering injury has limited ability to train in recent months and the procedure could not be put off any longer. A replacement has yet to be named but USA East officials will need to secure a strong fighter to step up as a loss to Belelux combined with a win by Team Finland against Bulgaria on July 4 could cost the squad its current first place lead in Group C.
If Migliaccio does not suffer any setbacks, it’s possible he could return to the team if USA East is able to qualify for the semifinals.
